MACRO Circular Opus 7

Spring 1998

MACRO MEMBER NEWS

Maureen Schafer was awarded MACRO's Robert Fountain Memorial Scholarship for her paper entitled, "Illuminating Text: A Macro Analysis of Franz Schubert's Auf dem Wasser zu singen." She is currently working on a second bachelor's degree in music at Eastern Michigan University and studies music theory with me (MACRO "Golden Retriever" Saker) and voice with Dr. Donald Hartmann. In 1992, she earned a B.A. with majors in English and Women's Studies from the University of Michigan. Maureen also received an award for her vocal abilities by earning 3rd place in her division in the NATS competition last month. Following completion of her undergraduate work, she plans to pursue graduate studies in music theory and voice.

Congratulations to Carol VanRandwyk upon obtaining a new position at Grand Rapids Community College. She will be teaching theory and keyboard harmony.

Journal

Musical Insights, our MACRO journal, is completed, and work has already begun on volume 2! Our mass mailing of the journal will happen sometime this fall. If you have not received your copy contact Jamie Henke (608-263-6822) and she will send one out to you. The deadline for submitting articles for volume 2 of the journal has passed, but especially for busy people, it's not too early to start thinking about articles for volume 3. If you have any questions about the journal, or article submission, please contact Marilyn Saker 734-487-1284 or msaker [at] emich.edu.

Financial Update

MACRO is funded by a $350,000 grant housed at the University of Wisconsin Foundation. The interest earned by this grant supports all of our activities so membership is free.

We are in the final stages of transferring the processing of MACRO funds from the School of Music to the Department of Liberal Studies and the Arts on the University of Wisconsin campus. This should make the entire payment process much easier and faster, however, during this transition period many individuals have been extremely patient and gracious while waiting for travel money, award money, and other reimbursements that are long over due. To them we extend our sincere apologies and thanks, and our assurances that you have not been forgotten and that you will be paid as soon as the funds have been released.

Membership Directory

Marilyn Saker is currently working on an official MACRO membership directory. Some of our information is incomplete and/or out of date. If you have recently moved, changed jobs, or graduated, please let us know so that we can create the most accurate directory possible. Contact Marilyn at 734-487-1284 or msaker [at] emich.edu.

Web Site

MACRO is currently in the process of developing a web site. What would you like to see included on our web site? Contact Jamie at (608-263-6822 or jamie.henke-paustian @ ccmail.adp.wisc.edu. This newsletter includes a list of all the opportunities offered by MACRO; we encourage you to make use of what we currently offer, and to invite you to create your own new opportunities as well.

As all of our members are very busy, the MACRO board has decided to ask an individual outside the MACRO group to get our site up and running. However, if you have any suggestions for the content of the site, OR are interested in contributing to any aspect of the site in any way please contact the MACRO chair. Our "web designer/developer" is a faculty member at UW-Madison who is responsible for one of the most popular Web Sites on campus, a site that has won eight awards in just this past year.

Workshop

Mark your calendars, the date for the MACRO Workshop has been set for May 14-15, 1999 at the Monona Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin. At your request, we have moved back to a Friday-Saturday schedule to help you with your travel and teaching plans. By popular demand we will be featuring another "open performance session," as well as a workshop within a workshop session on jazz for the classicist, an ear-training symposium, MACRO and performance issues, an open student forum, and a session on computer assisted instruction and MACRO. If you are interested in giving a session at the workshop, there are still a few spots available. Contact Jamie Henke at 608-263-6822 or jamie.henke-paustian @ ccmail.adp.wisc.edu.

Newsletter

The MACRO Circular, our newsletter, is currently created by our MACRO Chair, Jamie Henke. She has no proprietary feelings about this publication however, and welcomes your involvement in the creation of any portion of the newsletter. Our newsletter provides members with a chance to communicate on many different levels. In MACRO News, members can report on any and all of their various activities, whether job related or not. New members are introduced on a regular basis, and there is often a Letter from the Chair, usually a nagging reminder to get involved with all that MACRO has to offer. To date we offer three newsletter Features for Teachers, including "Teaching Hints," "Favorites Music Examples" and "Favorite Written Assignments." As with everything else in MACRO, we are always open to new ideas. Newsletter submission deadlines are as follows:

Newsletter Due Date
October 1 newsletter submissions DUE SEPTEMBER 15
February 1 newsletter submissions DUE JANUARY 15
April 1 newsletter submissions DUE MARCH 15

Newsletter submissions (except for articles) will be accepted in ELECTRONIC COPY ONLY. I prefer to receive newsletter submissions via e-mail, but will also accept submissions on disk if you do not have access to an e-mail account. For articles ONLY, I prefer to work with a paper copy.

Awards and Scholarships

We are very fortunate to be able to offer the Robert Fountain Memorial Scholarship for outstanding students in our organization. Students are invited to participate in everything MACRO has to offer, but this category is for students alone. Awards are awarded on an annual basis, and are anticipated to be in the vicinity of $500. In addition to the monetary award, the award winner(s) receives publication in our journal Musical Insights. Application materials are due March 1 of each year. For application materials and guidelines contact Jamie Henke.

MACRO offers research awards in amounts ranging from $500-$1,000. The board will also consider other amounts on a case by case basis for special projects. Award applications will be reviewed in October and also in May 1999. Research award money is only available to members of the organization. Projects must take place within one year of application. MACRO encourages projects in all areas of music. For application materials and guidelines contact Jamie Henke.

NEW! MACRO COMPOSITION COMPETITION.

Composers are invited to submit works involving in some way the concepts and/or principles of macro analysis for consideration in the competition. Works must have been written within the last two years, and may be of any duration, genre, and concert style. First, second, and third place winners will chosen, for award amounts ranging from $100-$500. The deadline for this competition is January 15, 1999. Winning compositions will be performed at the MACRO workshop. For application materials and further guidelines contact Warren Gooch at 660-785-4429 or wgooch [at] truman.edu.

The MACRO board has decided to add a Teaching Award to our current list of opportunities. We are currently discussing the guidelines for this award and welcome your input. Please direct your comments to Jamie Henke, MACRO Chair.

Awards for Schools. The MACRO board will consider funding for schools on an individual basis. The board has discussed providing textbooks for schools, and also strongly encourages projects involving instructor and student/joint participation (included on the research award application).

Travel Assistance to attend the MACRO workshop is provided on a first come first served basis. As our group continues to grow we may need to formalize this procedure, but for now, requesting travel assistance is as simple as sending an e-mail to jamie.henke [at] wisc.edu.
